Summary Letter, dated April 30, 1812, written by New York Governor Daniel Tompkins to Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry. The first part of the letter contains background information on an article of agreement (1786) entered into between Massachusetts and New York to oversee the future sale of Indian lands. Tompkins further writes that owners of the preemptive right of the Holland Purchase desire to hold a treaty with the native Indians to purchase certain lands in New York. He recommends that Judge Lemuel Chipman be appointed a superintendent for that purpose.

Biographical/Historical Note In 1796 the Holland Land Company acquired over one million acres in the Genesee region of western New York.
