Ownership inscription on t.p. of the comte de Caylus.
Tipped in at front: two leaves of ms. notes concerning research on Jehan Marion and the Marion genealogy, addressed to Prosper Blanchemain [?] by the comte de Soultrait, of the Société des bibliophiles françois; on letterhead of the Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon, dated Dec. 14, 1872 in Lyon.
Tipped in at leaf 40: one small leaf of ms. notes on pink paper in Blanchemain's hand, clarifying which poem by Mathurin Cordier (1479-1564) Marion chose to imitate in his "Carme admonitoire de Mathurin Cordier" (leaves 40-45).
Summary
One hundred twenty-eight unpublished poems by Jehan Marion, probably transcribed in France around 1550. The longest poem by far is entitled "Les questions damoure", on leaves 2-35. There is also a group of poems with metrical titles such as "Quadrain", "Sizain", "Huictain", "Dizain", and "Unzain", while other works bear form titles such as "Epistre", "Reponce", "Rondeaul", "Ballade", "Chanson", "Elegie", and "Epitaph". Also included on leaves 37 and 38 are three "unzains" or 11-line acrostic poems, in which the first letters of each line spell out the author's name vertically.
