Title Latin Psalter
Date 1480
Place France
Language Latin
Subjects Catholic Church, Psalters, Prayer books, Devotional literature
Summary Ms. Latin Psalter, transcribed and illuminated around 1480, probably in France or Flanders (Belgium). This version of the Psalter, commonly used throughout Gaul and thus known as the Gallican Psalter, includes the 150 Psalms of the Vulgate Bible, following the text as Jerome revised it on the basis of the "Hexapla." The transcription of Psalm CXVIII here is of special interest, as it includes, along the outer margins, the letters of the Hebrew alphabet which correspond to the letter with which the 8 lines of each of the 22 stanzas begins in the Hebrew text (e.g., the first eight lines of the first stanza begin with the first letter of the alphabet, "Aleph," the second, with "Beth," the third, with "Gimel," and so on.)  Additional psalms included are the "Simbolu[m] S[an]c[t]i Athanasi ep[iscop]i"; "Canticum Ysaye p[ro]ph[eta]e"; "Canticu[m] Ezechie regis"; "Canticu[m] Anne"; "Canticum Marie sororis Moysi"; "Canticum Abacuc p[ro]ph[eta]e"; "Canticum Moysi Deuteronomiu[m]"; "Canticum trium puerorum"; "Canticum Zacharie p[ro]ph[eta]e"; "Canticum Marie Uirginis"; "Canticum Simeonis"; and "Letania", a litany of saints.
