Summary Promissory note, Aug. 14, 1848, providing a horse as security for $5.00 borrowed from the Stockbridge Indians. The note is witnessed by Bangor Theological Seminary graduate Jeremiah Slingerland, a minister, teacher, and treasurer to the tribe, which had settled on the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin during the 1830's.

User-Contributed Transcription Know All Men By these presents that I Peter D. Littleman of the Town of Stockbridge County of Calumet and State of Wisconsin for and in consideration of the sum of Five Dollars to me in hand paid by the Stockbridge Tribe of Indians (The receipt whereof is humbly acknowledged) have bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and Sell unto the said Stockbridge Tribe of Indians one of my black horses now in my free & full possession to have and to hold the said ^ horse unto the said Stockbridge Tribe to their own proper use and benefit: provided that the said sum of Five Dollars ^ with interest therewith be not refunded by the Said Peter D. Littleman to the Stockbridge Tribe within Four Months from Date
