Dearest Katharine,
Your letter of July 12 was very welcome I was beginning to fear that a letter of yours or of mine might have been lost in the mail. But of course a vacation, either in prospect or while it lasts, takes one's mind off all routine, including letter-writing. Glad you had so pleasant a vacation. The business depression is something far worse than anything I can remember. The worst p[[??]]s one in my recollection was around 1904. I think I wrote you that about four months ago we cut expenses by sharing an apartment with a young man named Lo[[??]] Brown. The experiment has worked all right so far. He has paid his rent in advance, and has helped out on the food budget with all sorts of fruit and vegetables (he makes his living selling produce.) Just now business is bad for him because fruit is so very cheap that it hardly pays to carry around. He can buy good peaches for less than a cent a pound, but they are selling here at two or three cents a pound retail, as he
