Description Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849. 
User-Contributed Transcription ten, fifty of whom are girls and there are but five or six of them that do not study the [[longer??]] kinds of Arithmetic, Geography, and Grammar so that if my patrons are punctual in paying and I succeed in pleasing them, I shall do very well in pecuniary point of view.  I have almost every kind of study in my department some very good scholars and some poor ones, particularly in mathematics, the same as I used to have in Kentucky; have seven in French (all beginners; presume shall have more) and four in Drawing and Painting; expect more in this class too.  Chemistry I am teaching. And in school from seven o'clock in the morning until half past five at night - or rather in the afternoon when we have supper after which I hear the recitations of one of they young ladies in my room for the sake of having her remain here; she is [[different]] and has an impediment in her speech and does not like to go into the schoolroom to recite; has been away to a good many schools but would never stay more than a week so we want to keep her; she has been very homesick but think she will stay; she takes a great liking to me so she says - So you see I am as busy as ever; all the time I have to devote to Music, writing, [[??]] is a little while in the evening unless I sit up at night which I expect I should be compelled to do if I attend to these things for I am determined to get along in school without assistance if possible.  [[Helen]] has charge of the primary department which consists of twenty eight most of which are boys. There are thirty one in our family; the house is full enough and there is enough to be done I can assure you. Abby has sixteen in Music I think Including Helen and myself.  The Academy has been [[papered]] throughout since you were here and great improve-
