Summary
Diary kept by Moore on his July 3 - Sept. 20, 1845, excursion from New York City to the Mississippi. Entries contain full descriptions of steamboat travel aboard the Empire, Great Western, Champion, Cecilia, Atlas, and Senate, noting hazards such as snags, the use of lighters and other means to negotiate low water, cargo transport, repairs undertaken enroute, accomodations, etc. Moore describes cities and towns (Chicago, Galena, Nauvoo, and St. Louis) and encounters and conversations with ships' crews, passengers, and local residents (Jospeh Throckmorton, Alexander Jones, John E. Fletcher, Pierre Chouteau, James Harrison, John Lawrence Le Conte). He also notes interesting mineral deposits and the filthy conditions prevailing at rural roadside taverns and lodgings.
Biographical/Historical Note
Professor, librarian, and president of Columbia College (N.Y.), 1842-1849. Having unsuccessfully attempted in May, 1845, to resign a college presidency assumed out of a sense of duty, Nathaniel Fish Moore escaped in July, 1845, for a six-week tour to the upper Mississippi. Sixty-three years old, Moore travelled by steamboat, train, and stage up the Hudson River and west to Buffalo, across the Great Lakes to Detroit and Chicago, west to Galena, up the Mississippi to St. Peter and down to St. Louis, southwest to the Missouri iron country, up the Ohio River, and home to New York.
