User-Contributed Transcription legislature). In some ways I regret leaving now, for the English Dep't here is embarking upon a doctorate program (while Bridgeport only offer a M.A.), and I think I would be happy working with doctoral students. The Administra-tion here offered me that as an inducement (plus a thousand dollar raise and a nine hour teaching load), but Bridgeport still sounded better to me. I suspect — I fear — that next year I'll be begging to come back — but I hope not.
Of my own work I don't have much to say. I'm presently in the midst of semester exams, + next term I have four course — + four preparations — to teach. One of the courses is a graduate course (American Realism) + another is a mixed upper class and graduate course ("The American Novel"), + I suspect I'll do less than justice to these courses in order to save some time for my self. That's an injustice to the students maybe — but in this business nobody cares much about the students, + certainly no one gets ahead by trying to be a good teacher.
What else? The book — reprint — on West + the one on De Forest should be out around March or so. Aside from these all I have done is a review of the Comerchero book for Am. Literature. I thought the book was atrocious.
The family is all fine — though Sheldon had more trouble with athlete's foot for awhile. Amy is thinking of painting the inside of our house in order to sell it at a profit. I expect to take a whopping loss. The difference, I guess, is that between an optimist + a pessimist.
Love,
Jim
