Summary
Correspondence, together with articles and biographical notes assembled for an article about army surgeon Henry Rinalda Porter, a survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn; and photographs of the battlefield, of participants in the conflict, and of military posts; also aletter by George Crook, Feb. 24, 1888, and four pencil sketches of western scenes by Charles M. Russell. Porter materials include correspondence, 1931-1934, with various individuals including battle participant E.S. Godfrey. There is an extensive correspondence with North Dakota and Wisconsin photographer D.F. Barry regarding the battle and the sale of photographs to Cutter; Barry's letters are accompanied by many advertisements and brochures for his business. In addition to the Little Big Horn battlefield, subjects of photographs include the Big Hole battlefield, North Dakota forts Abraham Lincoln, Berthold, and Union, and Curley (Custer's scout), Sitting Bull, E.S. Godfrey, and Henry Rinalda Porter.
Biographical/Historical Note
Physician and author. Born in New Hampshire in 1875, Cutter obtained undergraduate (1898) and medical (1910) degrees from the University of Nebraska. He was employed there as a scientist and administrator (dean of the medical school, 1915-1925) until his appointment in 1925 as dean of Northwestern University's medical school. Cutter wrote extensively on medical subjects, including those of a historical nature.
