Description
Recto. Col. John Bradstreet's August 31, 1764, draft instructions regarding the reoccupation of Fort Michilimackinac to Captain William Howard of the 17th Regiment of Foot. Bradstreet orders a combined force of regulars, militia, and artillery to approach Michilimackinac undetected, to ready the fort for defense, and to return to Detroit with the fort's inhabitants. Bradstreet also instructs Howard to "use the Savages with civility" and to allow trade to proceed outside the garrison, but under its protection.
