Title
Inscription by Norman Wait Harris on endpapers of "The Fifty-seventh Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers"
Date
1911
Subjects
Harris, Norman Wait, 1846-1916
Description
Inscription written by N. W. Harris on endpapers of "The Fifty-seventh Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers" (1896) regarding his Civil War experience. The book is in the collections of the Newberry Library, Special Collections Department, within a gift of material given by Cynthia Oudejans Harris in 1994. The inscription reads: "During the Civil War I offered to enlist in the army twice, but was declined as being too young. In the spring of 1864, with my father's consent, I enlisted into Company K, sharpshooters of the 57th Mass vols. and went into camp at Worcester, Mass. While there I was taken with the measles and took severe cold, losing my voice. Was put into the hospital and was there when the regiment left for the seat of War. My brother, Dr. D. J. Harris visited me in the hospital and assured me that in his opinion it was very doubtful about my recovering my voice could not do without the best of care (He immediately joining the blockading of Charleston as asst. surgeon) & hence I consented to return to my Becket home, where my mother prevailed upon my father to give me my time until I was 21 years of age (then I was only 17 years of age) so that I could go to work and earn money to go to college which I had greatly desired to do. This I accepted and gave up my army ambitions. It was undoubtedly God's providence, as he had other work for me to do. N. W. Harris Wadsworth Hall September 11, 1911."
