Dear Jack,

I trust you had a wonderful time while you were in Europe.  Germany is the county that I have spent the most time in abroad, except Turkey.  I have been in Italy when I was traveling to and fro from U.S. -Turkey and U.S. & Germany.
The Carlton edition should be interesting. and I would like to see what you have to offer.  I think your little book with Arna Bontemps should be timely, and I hope it sells like hot cakes.  The Migration of Negroes and hill folk from the south is still terrific and I would wonder if you have thought of dealing with southern "whites" in your revision?
Speaking of your book "Making" the grade in American Lit. classes - I read it in a special honors course on Modern Novel at Central College, Fayette, back in 1941.
When we get together I have some questions to ask you about your honest assessment of The Church. then and now.  I am very concerned about the church failing to be really a part of the vital processes of life - The Roman Catholic underlined: boyswere often underlined: "closer" to the poor than were the white protestant clergy - tho I wonder if the [sic] knew what it all ment [sic] - The Roman Catholics in Moberly were so busy rubbing off their underlined:  "foreign" origin - the Irish seeking to be respectable, and the Germans trying to play down their ties to the Kaiser -
Do you like to "speak"?  Thought maybe you might be available sometime to give us the benefit of your introspectives and so forth --
I am glad that you have found me "in the world", and the "pie in the sky" gospel of the "Northern Methodist" was rather meaningless in 1930, as it is more so in 1960's!
