Dear Alex,
Was very glad to find your letter awaiting me on my arrival at Newton today, and it did me a great deal of good as I look upon you as a [[bant?]] the only real friend I have outside of my own family. Had plenty of them when in a fine position of [[Counsl?]].
The reason of my feeling discouraged is this:
Although the management of this road is kindly disposed towards me and the General [[Manager?]] himself wrote a letter to one of his Supt's in my behalf saying "my services had always been very acceptable to the Company & he would like to see me placed on his list for a station the
