Summary An account, dating from 1760, of Lambertye's travels and experiences in the Windward Islands and other parts of the Caribbean, written at the request of the margravine of Baden-Durlach. The opening section deals with the Carib Indians: their nature, customs, physical appearance, dress, weapons, commerce, and religion.  The author then describes many of the unique and curious species of plant and animal life found in the islands of the West Indies, with special mention of Martinique, the Grenadines, and St. Domingue.  He includes notes on caymans, lizards, sea tortoises, parrots and other tropical birds, precious stones and metals, and three sources of poisons used by the Caribs against their enemies: the manchineel tree, a venomous jellyfish called la galere, and a type of Caribbean barracuda, le becune.  There are separate sections on the cultivation and uses of manioc, potatoes, bananas, cassava, yams, and prickly pears, as well as discussions of the harvesting and preparation of dyes from cochineal and indigo.
