Dear Jack -
You very kindly sent me a copy of your "The Journalistic Vision" and I have been inexcusably tardy in thanking you for its excellence. Your journalistic vision is the most comprehensive by far that I've come across. I wish you would try to publish this paper - in Atlantic Monthly, American Scholar, Commentary, a dozen others. Even the New York Times Magazine Section. Even if they didn't print it, it would've done them good to read it!!
Particularly compelling was your own instance of abstractions made concrete - your dialog with the reporter in the Senate Press Gallery on the "revenue-sharing versus school milk program" interpretation of the debate. Your criticisms of Halberstam-type journalism I found brilliant. Brilliant also is the only word for your analysis of his book, & new journalism' predications.
One brief passage left me unconvinced in the Moynihan discussion, your saying he didn't seem to realize it's in the very nature of journalism to be hostile to government, or power. I can't accept as fact the claim that government isn't at least doing some things right, some of the time, even 60% of most things right 60% of most times. Why be endemically hostile to what is done that is
