Summary Correspondence, writings, pictorial materials, and newsclippings dating mainly from 1890 to 1944, which document the literary and personal life of George Ade. With the exception of Ade's writings and some photographs and newsclippings, the papers come largely from his later literary career and active retirement at Hazelden, his Brook, Indiana, estate.  They reflect Ade's close connections with family, friends, and colleagues (John T. McCutcheon, etc.), club and university ties (Purdue University, Sigma Chi, Indiana Society of Chicago, White Chapel Club, Mark Twain Society of Chicago), and conservative political activities (Committee of One Hundred).  Included are outgoing letters to Franklin J. Meine, Evelyn Gilman, William F. Kurfess, and Charles Fernald.  Incoming correspondence, addressed to Ade, Kurfess, Meine, James D. Rathbun, and Edward M. Martin, together with related programs, articles, etc., concerns Ade, the Ade family, the George Ade Memorial Association, the Committee of One Hundred, and Ade's literary and university affiliations.  Also mss, typed, and printed copies of Ade's individual works (some concerning Mark Twain and James Whitcomb Riley), newsletters written by Ade to family and friends, photographs of Ade, his family, and estate, and caricatures of Ade and George Barr McCutcheon.
Biographical/Historical Note Hoosier journalist, humorist, and playwright best known for his Chicago Record column, "Stories of the streets and of the town," which was illustrated by John T. McCutcheon; for his syndicated "Fables in slang;" and for his Broadway plays including The college widow and The county chairman.
