User-Contributed Transcription about more than I have yet done. Business here seems to be quite brisk although business men are saying that the "times are hard" were it not for the Jublie improvements going on here I think that it would be very dull. The Republican State Convention met in this City this week and have made nominations for State Officers. Election Oct 13th they feel pretty confidant that they will carry the State but I judge it to be very doubtful, although the nominations are generally satisfactory. There is a feeling that in the Constitutional Convention they sacrificed right to policy. how far this feeling may affect the vote in Oct I cannot judge. it will certainly rob the party of the enthusiasm of many of its best men, there are many men here who believe that a colored man is as capable of voting understandingly as a raw Irishman as an Indian, I profess to believe that myself.Crops here are generally good. The grasshopers destroyed the most of the crops above St Anthony within three miles of the river. Corn is backward and perhaps not so good as usual, but if the frost holds off a short time longer there will be very good crops. There will be but little produce required to be bro't from below this fall. although I suppose there is not near the amount
