User-Contributed Transcription 4 Lake, who is now agent for the company, we went to see the "Lions." The bellows and other machinery I will not attempt to describe, and will only say of the Furnace that it s a great large place, built of stone cemented together, walls 16 or 18 feet thick, inlaid with fire proof brick, and looked hotter inside than any other place I ever saw except a glass oven. And such a roaring where the wind pipes went in each side! I could not help feeling afraid it would blow up all the time I was there. From the ground, where i the mouth of the furnace we went up two flights of stairs to the top of the furnace. There, when it is sufficiently melted down, which they ascertain by measuring with a rod, they put in ten bushels of charcoal lime stone, dross from the furnace, and another kind of stone somewhat resembling lime stone, which is found near the furnace and will answer in part instead of lime stone which they have to bring from Sebec - small quantities of each of these are used. They use about 12 hundred bu. of charcoal & 15 tons of ore, and make 7 or 8 tons of iron per day. They have seven large kilns for burning coal, which hold 50 cords of wood each, and cost from 700 to 1000 dollars apiece. They are built of brick with large wooden pillars and roof outside. When we had seen all these we went over to Moses Greenleaf's and took tea. He was quite unwell. They have both been out of health and he out of business all summer. They live in a little house with only one room finished. I suspect they are really poor. Moses will not work, let what will come. They are going out to Ill. in a few
