User-Contributed Transcription It would be such a comfort to Mother, too, to have her nearer to her. Mother does think a great deal about having you all where she can see you often. I suppose all Mothers must feel so.I wrote you about Gen. Hodsdon - extracts from his letter &c. He himself appeared in person a few days since. He marched in with quite a military air, looked at Mother for some seconds without speaking, and then deliberately kissed her - I say deliberately, and sure enough it was, from the commencement to the close. I, being an eye witness to the whole operation, can truly declare that it was "lengthened sweetness long drawn out." Poor Mother! how prettily she blushed & turned her eyes earthward, while he held both her hands in his! How she will box my ears for this but how can I help it? He is really a very fine old gentleman - possessed of excellent feelings, I should judge - would be very interesting in conversation if he could manage to dispense with the first person singular a little more. He reminds me of Father Furber in story telling very much. Has been about the world a good deal - besides serving in the Aroostook War!Prof. Shepard is delivering a course of lectures Sabbath evenings upon various subjects suggested by various ministers for the benefit of the community. He is a noble man. Mr. Tebbets is at work in earnest getting out the finish for our house. It is after twelve and I must finish this to send down by him.
