User-Contributed Transcription Well I had a fine time at Bangor. Staid with Ann at Mr. Jewell's. Helped her some in school, and some I studied French & Drawing. Succeeded beyond my expectations in Drawing, never having practiced much. Ann was intending to write to you immediately & will probably give you information about her school. She wanted me to stay and help her the coming term, but we finally concluded that what little money could be spared ought to be sent to you, instead of spending it for my board & fixins. Yesterday, the very day after I got home, I had an application to teach the Hobbs school, - two months - commencing first & middle of May, 9/ per week. I do not give a decided answer for a fortnight, and meanwhile mean to try for a better chance - longer school. I hate to go live among those "Hindoos" again, but lucre must be had. I suppose you have'nt heard that Uncle Nathan wrote to Mother informing her that a certain very respectable widower, about sixty years old, is in want of a wife & expressed his wants to Uncle Nathan, who urges Mother, with much warmth, to lay aside the name of Metcalf & take Jenkins as a substitute! What think of that, eh? But more of this anon. I told Mother if she was not so minded herself, she could tell him she had three marraigable daughters! ha! ha! ha! This Capt. Jenkins is a fine man, pretty wealthy, having sons & daughters grown up, married & in business; Lawyer in N.Y. Merchant in Boston etc. but - he is a Unitarian. Mother of course told him "nay" for she'd rather 'bide with her own children. Strange things sometimes happen in our world; for instance Jo had seen two person of the female kind that he
