User-Contributed Transcription Bangor Dec. 27 - 1854.Dear Sister Nettie The date above almost frightens me - how soon the new year will be here! How fast the years do go by lately! If I should live to be old, I think they would seem only a rapid whirl to me/ Thus much the date of my letter called forth, - now let me proceed to thank you for another dear letter received two days since. As, in point of time, I stand between the two, I will wish you a "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" before I forget it! We had a very quiet, happy time on the 25 - Ellen gone all day, as it is a high day with the Catholics. By the way I must tell you that her parents arrived here from Ireland Christmas day. They had a very long passage, got nearly out of provisions, and for the last three weeks had nothing but oatmeal soup. as Ellen called it, once a day. They were really almost starved. I expect the poor emigrants[left-hand side and top] sleeves this winter, that is, half way from the elbow to the wrist, open. I made his Thibet dress short & have him wear drawers when he dresses up, but he is sure to mortify me if I take him out! You ask, "How do I like Jara?" As I like the "wide, wide world," "Queechy," and many more of the same stamp - not so well as "Father Bright Hopes". Love such readings, and think is well enough, but not much, especially for young folks. On the whole, I should not rank it with the books I named.
