User-Contributed Transcription good man's countenance is worth the price of the book almost - Well, all this fussing, together with "sights" of callers and Mr. & Mrs. Packard, while I am longing to be with Maria all the time, though I hope the worst is over. She was quite sick two or three days with dysentery, occasioned chiefly by excitement talking with Mary, who is slightly apt to "get odd", Gertie has been ailing all along - and Monday was taken worse - tuesday was in a stupid state all day - at might they were much alarmed & feared congestion of the brain, but I think it was weakness & exhaustion - & that the long sleep of lethargy was the crisis. I want down early Wednes. morn, staid all the forenoon found her looking better than I expected, though very sick. While I was there, she had a long sweet sleep, with closed eyes, her flesh grew warmer & her skin moist and she continues to improve. If her diarrhea does not return, I think she will get over it. She is very poor, most as bad as Percie was last summer. She is a little frail thing - takes cold so easily. They were going to telegraph to Hattie, but concluded not to - she is coming this fall. I guess Mary knows how much it troubled Maria - she is as good as possible now, but I don't know as I could get along with such a creature in the house. Ellen is so good. The
