Dear Jack -
Wally wrote me a note explaining his silence and expressing his contempt for his landlord. I've tried calling several times. The phone rings but w.w. must be in his atelier above his old pad. This weekend I'll go over to St. Louis and do my best to revive McWharton's low spirits.
Do you advise me to borrow a tactic from McCarthy and turn Wharton's spleen on the ancient wagon wheels? Remembering the Reichstag fine - Vanderhubbe, Popoff, Toneff & Dimitnoff, why not draw a parallel? Wharton's fire must have been incendiary. Otherwise it would have occurred long ago. Think of all the careless parties not to mention orgies [some text is scribbled out] at which no fires started. Wally must make an immediate check of all his present & past friends.
I await approval from you on this plan to divest Wally's attention from his despair. Perhaps it would be best if he remained unhappy of the alternative is the above.
Yrs.
