Summary
Official copy from the register of the Conseil d'Etat, dated Nov. 13, 1702, of the decree of May 13, 1675 signed by the king's minister, Colbert at Compiegne, France, granting Fort Frontenac and surrounding lands to Robert de La Salle and his heirs. In accordance with La Salle's request, the king agrees to give him Fort Frontenac, four leagues of surrounding lands, including shoreline lands and islands, and hunting and fishing rights for Lake Ontario and nearby rivers. In return, La Salle promises to underwrite the reconstruction and maintenance of Fort Frontenac in the sum of 10,000 livres; to strengthen its defenses so as to equal those of Montŕeal; to train 20 men to guard the fort, and to assist in building a church, which will be used to teach Christianity to the Indians. The Indians will receive parcels of cleared land to cultivate, and along with the French settlers, will establish a village there to fall under the jurisdiction of the Leiutenant General of Québec. Included is the certification of authenticity, signed by François de Beauharnois, member of the king's Conseil, and accompanied by the king's wax seal. The signature of the copyist [?] "Par Monsieur Trebard," appears below.
