Summary
Collection of English and American autographs, dated between 1552 and 1759, as they appear on letters, receipts, petitions, orders to pay, depositions, and council proceedings. Six receipts include a rent receipt of William Cooke from 1552; receipt for interest payment of 1705, signed by Thomas Guy, of Guy's Hospital, London; annuity receipt of April 16, 1712 by Richard Hoare, former Mayor of London; and court receipts from 1756 for bail money. Letters include one in German from King George II of Great Britain, to his brother-in-law, Frederick William I, King of Prussia, dated Nov. 18, 1716, and letters on scholarly subjects from Charles Lyttelton, bishop of Carlisle, dated Sept. 9, 1758, and from the British historian John Campbell to John Zephaniah Holwell, governor of Bengal (1711-1798), dated Nov. 30, 1759. Letters of testimony are dated Aug. 26, 1689 by Elizabeth Pierce, sworn before William Johnson; and March 15, 1758 [?] by Edward Johnson concerning charges brought against George Polly for idleness, consorting with another woman, and family neglect. Sworn testimony of William Tilly, dated Sept. 7, 1654 and signed by [Capt.] Humphrey Atherton, concerns passage into Winter Harbour [Maine?] from the Saco River. Also included are printed minutes with ms. additions of the proceedings of the Court of Common Council of the city of London for 1683 and 1701; and orders to the treasury of England to pay trumpeter John Broat, signed on Feb. 3, 1648 by Henry Mildmay, and four of the regicides of Charles I: Sir Gregory Norton, John Lisle, Cornelius Holland, and Nicholas Love; and Phineas Pitt, master shipwright under James I, signed by the Earl of Middlesex on May 15, 1623. Undated materials include a personal letter addressed to Miss P. Ward of Vine Street from L.H.S. [Lydia H. Sigourney, 19th-century author of popular verse and articles?].
