The deportation of our people from Vittel took place in a very dramatic manner. There were suicides. 1500 Christian fellow internees witnessed the sad performance, many of them are probably now in this country.

250 people were gathered in a well known place, supervised by the International Red Cross in Geneva and by 2 protecting consuls (the Spanish and the Surs); they bombarded the whole world with S.O.S. - letters; there was a clear and comparatively easy way to rescue them; their rescue wouldn't have constituted any technical difficulty because their number was small, neither any "dangerous" precedent since no more passport holders were alive; there was plenty of time, we spent more than a year in Vittel; the Germans were willing to let us live if the "peace of paper" had arrived.
