Date
1900-1926
Place
Illinois--Evanston
Description
Photograph of Dr. Dwight James Harris, N. W. Harris's older brother. He was born on August 24, 1838, in Becket, Massachusetts. In the spring of 1860, he graduated from the Suffield (Connecticut) Literary Institute and then attended one year in the Literary Department of the University of Michigan. The next year he entered the medical school at the same university and graduated with a medical degree in 1864. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy as an assistant surgeon and served until the end of the Civil War. Most of his service was on the USS "Commodore McDonough." After the war, he moved to Madison, Ohio, where he practiced medicine from 1865 to 1873. He was instrumental in organizing the Lake and Ashtabula Counties Medical Society (Ohio), and for many years was the president of the board of education in Madison. In 1873, he became an examiner for the Union Central Life Insurance Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, and also served as the head of its mortgage loan business. He married Mary Elvira Ingham, and they had two sons, Arthur Merriman Harris (born in 1865) and Frank Milton Harris (born in 1874). At some point before 1900, he moved to Chicago, and then later moved to Evanston, Illinois, where he died on March 23, 1926. He is buried in Rosehill Cemetery.
