Summary Newspaper clippings, court documents, and letters, dated between 1855 and 1942, relating to the Icarian Community in Nauvoo, Illinois, and Corning, Adams County, Iowa. A lengthy set of clippings, from the Nauvoo rustler of Mar. 6, 1917, on the history of the Icarians utopian experiment at Nauvoo has been mounted on the first [21] leaves of an Iowa Library Commission printed annual report for 1915. Two additional clippings by C.P. Dadant, one from the Hamilton press of Hamilton, Ill. of Oct. 2, 1924, provide additional information on the settlement and its founder, the French communist Etienne Cabet. There is also a small item from the Nauvoo independent tipped-in, concerning the theft of the scrapbook from the home of Gus Vallet [in Keokuk, Iowa?] Four items, dated between April 11 and Nov. 5, 1855, are court papers or drafts on blue paper with traces of red seals, prepared by the plaintiff's attorney J.M. Beck, of the firm Miller & Beck, in the case of Samuel Griffith vs. The Icarian Community. A letter to J.M. Beck from J.F. Powett of Quincy, Adams County, Iowa, dated Mar. 26, 1861, is a response to Beck's query about information on the Icarian Community. Finally, there is a clipping, with photograph, from the Chicago Daily News of July 24, 1942 on the Icarian apartment houses in Nauvoo, some of the earliest apartment houses in Illinois.
