Summary
Holograph diary of Lieut. Daniel Clapp of the 1st New Hampshire Regiment, describing his march, June 9-September 16, 1779, with Gen. Sullivan against the Six Nations. Clapp's diary begins with the cutting of a road through the wilderness between Easton and Wyoming, and ends with news of Gen. Sullivan's announcement that the successful campaign was over. Noted are details and difficulties of the march, burning of Indian villages, destruction of corn and fruit trees, battles and skirmishes (including the Battle of Newtown), the meeting with Gen. Clinton's troops at Tioga, a military funeral (Capt. Kimball), an elderly Tuscarora woman sheltered by the Americans, rescued white captives (a young child and a prisoner taken in 1778 at Wyoming), and the Seneca and Genesee castles. Also accounts, 1804-1817, kept by Daniel Clapp at Royalton, Vt.
Biographical/Historical Note
Revolutionary War officer, 1776-1781. Originally of Hanover, N.H., Clapp served as a lieutenant in Bedel's New Hampshire Regiment, July-Nov., 1776; and in the 1st New Hampshire Regiment as a 2d lieutenant, 1776-1778, 1st lieutenant, 1778-1780, and captain, 1780-1781. In 1779, Clapp's regiment participated in Gen. Sullivan's punitive expedition against the Iroquois in Pennsylvania and New York, marching from Easton to Wyoming, Pa., up the Susquehanna River to Tioga, and on into the Finger Lakes Region of New York. In 1786, Clapp settled in Royalton, Vt., where he remained until his death in 1817.
