Summary
Official copy of an indenture, dated Dec. 1, 1845 in Washington City, Illinois, for sale of land by Potawatami Chief Shab-eh-nay (Shabbona) to Ansel A. Gates of Lee County, Illinois. The deed documents the transfer of title to 640 acres, section 23, township 38, north range through third east principal meridian in DeKalb County, Illinois to Gates for $1200. The land was part of the reserve awarded to Shab-eh-nay and his Band for their use by the treaty of Prairie du Chien of July 29, 1829. The deed was originally signed by Shab-eh-nay and by Indian agent, Richard S. Elliott. Appended is certification signed by Edward F. Brown, Commissioner of Deeds for the State of Illinois, on Dec. 2, 1845 in the District of Columbia, Washington County, stating that Shabbona, through his interpreter W.B. Beaubien, had full understanding of the foregoing transaction. On that same date, Elliott and Ret. Brigadier General George Gibson witnessed Gates' payment of $1200 to Shab-eh-nay; Elliott also certified the authenticity of the copies on Dec. 5, 1845 in Washington, Ill.
