User-Contributed Transcription March 20thRacine 1849Dear brotherYour letter date Feb 17th came safely to hand two or three weeks since. My leisure has been much occupied with school duties since that time: - I have also written a long letter to my friend miss Doe due from me, otherwise I should have answered yours sooner. I feel desirous of having this reach you soon, hoping what I write may influence your plans somewhat. If you should be here and wish the situation, I think you could be chief director, engineer or whatever on this veritable plank road to be commenced this spring, provided you understand the construction of bridges for two will have to be built, it is said. I spoke with Mr. Hopkins about it, he made inquiry of one of the managers of the business who said no man was engaged as yet, he would mention it to others - nothing very definitive to be sure, but it might not be amiss for you, (unless something very promising offers thereabout - to take a trip to the West even upon uncertainties, look round and see what is to be done in this part of the world - it would not be time lost entirely even if you found no situation that you liked, though that would be hardly probably in the midst of all the enterprise and rapid increase of these new places. How delightful it would be for me, for you to be here, enjoying yourself, being useful and making money. Had you not better come and see? I suppose your route would be course be from Boston to Buffalo on the W.R.R. then I should think at this season, across the central railroad from Detroit through Michigan to, or near St. Joseph's on the E. side of Lake Michigan - would be preferable, because quicker
