User-Contributed Transcription much attention and have enjoyed my visit much. Cousin Lucy is teaching here, has a pleasant situation with good wages. she seems to be quite a favourite is particularly attractive to gentleman; her acquaintances are of a high stamp as to worth and respectability . I like her much. Abby ( Mrs. Dr. Halderman) has recently moved her; her husband is getting practice, he is a descendant of Penn. Ducth -a Methodist, as is also Abby; very good people. he has education but not intelligence or liberality of views: they are rather poor; have one child. Cousin Jerusha Clark is really a noble woman, she has a family of eight children five of them Mr. Clark's by a former wife an excellent mother she is; I have enjoyed much from renewing my acquaintance with her. we had not met for about sixteen years. Lucy boards with her. Mr. Clark is a sensible, shrewd, good common man. the maker of his own fortunes, and a wealthy man I expect, but making no display of it. at present his business is in a lumber yard. He owns some farms in the country besides a good house in which he lives. he is about building a handsome house on a farm one mile from the city on this farm as is the case with most of the land here every acre on an average, yields coal to the value of eight hundred dollars, in addition to the rich soil for cultivation; I was not aware before coming here that all this region abounds in coal; It is the bituminous causes much smoke and an unpleasant gas which the smoke gives the place is dingy appearance.[up left side]The weather has been excessively warm since my stay here. the air hot heavy mushy filled with coal smoke and dust; but the evenings are delightful; it is the custom here for the people to enjoy the evening out of doors, or sitting on the steps. I have had two boat rides up the river by moon light
