User-Contributed Transcription Bangor May 23 - sister AnnaDu Quoin June 1853lent assistance to sustain law and succeeded soon in securing him and the Yankee too who were both carried by a number of men through the streets to the watch house: Eliab afterwards had a long talk with the Yankee who appeared ashamed and penitent and E. made an effort yesterday (Sunday) to get him released before being brought before the court. I have not heard whether he succeeded but presume he did. I suppose not a little liquor is sold here still though the officers are much more effective this year than last - Our ministers are all absent now for three or four sabbaths and we are served with strangers which is not quite as pleasant Maria has taken a class in the Sabbath School: Prof. Sheppard and wife knew her father well in Connecticut and Miss Jenkins also; one of the churches. She seems much pleased with Bangor and its inhabitants. I am glad you have a buggy to ride in: I should not like to be confined to riding on horseback, pleasant and healthful as it is. The season is two or three weeks earlier than usual here the fields and woods wear that indefinable soft hue - the first of the wonderful changes of natures lovely robe of summer freshness, the green grass on the terrace quite waves in the wind and is spotted all over with dandelions blossoms: The new cherry trees have a few blossoms on them the roses under the window are coming out finelyFor luxurious and beauty this cold and sterile region cannot compare with your fine climate yet the sons and daughters of New Eng. must love best their own hard soil and bracing air: God has set one thing over against another. Excuse this rambling and hasty letter and write soon my dear brother and sister to your Sister Anna
