User-Contributed Transcription The family consists of two daughters one 15, the other 8 years old, the house is a pretty cottage, carpeted all over, room enough, some trees around it, a garden, and from the front of the house is seen the broad expanse of the lake with vessels constantly passing and repassing. I have a comfortable little chamber to myself, the use of two drawers in a bureau, and a large closet: the house is neat, the table plain but good: an elderly woman takes the work, and there is a young friend from Ohio spending the winter, half visit, half help: all sit at the same table and apparently a pleasant family:- this is my second day here, and I have told you all I know myself of my situation and prospects. I received your letter most gladly but not till the day before I left Hartford, one from Mother and one from Isaac that same day. I had the pleasure too of reading a letter from Isaac to the Com. very well written, quite judicious and timely-written on my behalf to secure me a good place. etc. it was very kind in him. There were all sorts of means of improvement while I staid at Hartford, time closely occupied; - Miss Beecher spent the last week in the house with us giving us lessons in calisthenics & much advice, she also presented each of the class with her Domestic Economy & Receipt book bound in one. I have really become quite attached to some of the girls of the class--being associated so closely I had good opportunities to get acquainted etc. One girl 20 years old from Hamilton N. York, an adopted daughter of Prof. Eaton, and engaged to a student in that university, she goes for the sake of doing good, and of disciplining her own character is going to stay two years, then return and attend school one year before her marriage, she has gone to Ill. one of the most interesting girls I ever saw: another girl from Fitchburgh, engaged to a merchant, had a winter school engaged high wages; when she met with one of the circulars? and decided ? page torn superiour girl 16, has gone five miles from ? words missing bottom of page torn one I was most
