Summary
Letterbook containing contemporary copies of correspondence, orders, etc., mainly between George Atkinson, and his superior, John Thomas, factor at the Moose factory, Sept. 22, 1784 - July 21, 1785. There are also orders issued by Atkinson to James Robertson at Rupert's Bay and a letter from Edward Jarvis at Fort Albany. Letters discuss the prospects and results of the fur trade and the work of company factors, laborers, and Indians to that end; plans for experiments with whaling and exploration to the north of Eastmain; and problems and logistics of everyday existence -- provisions, manpower, equipment, etc. Also mentioned is the encroachment of settlers on company lands.
Biographical/Historical Note
Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) chief factor at the Eastmain factory located at the mouth of Riviere Eastmain, Quebec, on James Bay. Born in England, Atkinson joined the HBC in the late 1750's, serving as a sailor and later mate on its James Bay sloops. In 1778, Atkinson was appointed master of Eastmain, a command he held almost continuously until his death in 1792. Under Atkinson's direction, the Eastmain grew in importance, and by 1786, the post had become independent of Moose Factory and a factory in its own right.
