Summary Contract, dated in Paris on Sept. 21, 1843, between Henry Castro of Paris and Joseph Emmenecker of Cernay-la-ville, France, allowing Emmenecker to settle and cultivate land in San Antonio de Bexar (San Antonio) Texas owned by Castro. In 1842, Castro entered into a contract with Samuel Houston's government of the Republic of Texas to settle a colony in Southwest Texas on the Medina River, and was authorized to make land grants of 640 acres to families, and 320 acres to single men 17 years of age and older. Settlers had to build a cabin, clear the land, and promise to cultivate 15 acres for at least 3 years. The contract allows Joseph Emmenecker to take possession one year from Feb. 1, 1843, and upon payment of 100 francs as a refundable security deposit, of 640 acres in San Antonio, Texas, the parcel of land to be determined by Castro's agent in Texas, Capt. Hays, certified government land surveyor. The contract is signed by Castro and Emmenecker in Paris, Sept. 21, 1843, and carries the stamp of the Texian Legation in Paris and signature of the chargé d'affaires, Ashbel Smith. Other appended receipts are signed by Emmenecker in Anvers, Oct. 28, 1843; and in Galveston, Jan. 6, 1844.
