Summary
The account, either by Gouin de Beauchesne or the voyage's chronicler Monsieur de Villefort, of an expedition to the South Atlantic Ocean, through the Strait of Magellan, and up the Pacific coast of South America, between 1698 and 1701. Gouin de Beauchesne commanded the ships Phelippeaux, Conte de Maurepas, Necessaire and Bonne Nouvelle for the Compagnie royale du mer du Sud, which set sail from La Rochelle, France on December 17, 1698 to colonize unclaimed territories; to obtain information about the area and its inhabitants; and to look for a commercial route to the Pacific. During the voyage, Louis-le-Grand Island was claimed and another island in the vicinity of the Falklands was discovered and named for the captain, Beauchêne Island. Two of the four ships survived the harsh weather, Spanish settlers, and French buccaneers and returned to La Rochelle in August, 1701. For further details cf. Mateo Martinic's Historia del Estrecho de Magallanes (Santiago de Chile: Ed. Andres Bello, 1977) and Ernesto Morales' Historia de la Aventura (Buenos Aires: Ed. Americana, 1942).
