User-Contributed Transcription it, but at the last moment Frank called to say Betty was worse and not to come. Now a line or two for Ruth's trouble, most of which is now in the past. On May 7th she had a job of heavy surgery aimed at what was mistakenly thought to be lung cancer. A 4-hour operation brought forth a large but benign tumor on the vagus nerve, hidden away behind lung, heart, etc. & next to the spine -- a spot unreachable by the biopsy needle. They damned near cut her in two but she is slowly coming around and in another two weeks sill be back in harness.Have I written you that we're due to go back to Japan for a couple of months in the fall for some lectures at Meiji Univ.? And next spring I'm signed up as a sub for the Chicago English dept as the only ambulatory American lit man they will have available that quarter. All the rest have grants and fellowships abroad. Hope I can make it until then.Congratulations, Jack and best wishes! Walsh plans to write you.-- Merlin Bowen
