User-Contributed Transcription James Blake 52603 3d F&.TJuly 16. 54.Dear Lorraine,I keep firing these things out into the wild blue, and nothing keeps happening. What is it with you? May I hear, coy wahn?I'd like to give you a picture of the joint, if I may. Physical layout, that is. Raiford is, I believe, the only pen surrounded by fence instead of walls. Three fences, two of them about ten feet high, between them one about sixteen feet high, charged at the top. Entirely adequate for the purpose, you will agree, but avoiding the claustrophobic pall that a wall imparts.Within the fences, a busy compound, - no expanses of concrete, rather wide stretches of grass, dominated by the long three-story E-shaped main building, a blinding dazzle of white in the Florida sun. The inner courts between the wings are planted with Washington palms and other tropical flora. Another huge white building opposite houses the mess-hall and the auditorium, where movies are shown Sunday nights, with the orchestra playing before and after.A paved street runs down the center, leading to the various work-plants (one which makes the state license-tags) - there is a chapel, recently built, red-brick and admirably restrained in architecture, the interior of which is the exposed brick and glowing cedar, the windows amber glass -
