User-Contributed Transcription April 27, 1952Dear Jack - Enjoyed the Rose Macaulay "Told By An Idiot" very much. The lady has a deadly aim. And in telling a comprehensive and illuminating tale of the period from late Victorian to World War I she manages, with lethal gentility, to slit a number of gullets. Nice light malice, and some satisfactory assassination.I liked her account of the critic who hailed Hall Caine's advent as the Second Coming, and then deciding he had been wrong, changed his name, unable to go on living under such a handicap. They took those things more seriously in those days - I don't look for the subsequent career of James Jones, for instance, to being on a rash of aliases in the critical fraternity - But that is prophecy, not only risky but impertinent.I've been reading the Short novels of Colette - Hers is a perfumed and feverish indoor world, where loving and being loved is of terrible crushing importance. Her small canvases are shrewdly and deftly done, with a kind of astringent compassion, and full of sudden flashes: "Chere, devoid of humour, came up against Lea's pleasantry like an ant against a piece of coal." Damn the woman! And I, a silly wretch in a constant turmoil of infatuation(over)
