August 16, 1951Dear Jack -The usual hassle over procuring a stamp and envelope has kept me from writing sooner to thank you for the two books you sent.I particularly enjoyed "Caliban," a deft and witty thing, written with such a wealth of detail that I was led to speculate on whether it was a thinly-veiled account of the rise to power of [Beaverbrook?]. I was amused by Bulmer's descriptions of his two sisters as "embroidering table scarves for people who had never done them any harm." A pretty funny book, and an absorbing story. The other, by Elizabeth Bowen, was one of those English novels about the Riviera I have always liked, gentle and comfortable, along the line of Stern's "Oldeander River" or Margery Shay's "Nutmeg Tree." Bowen has a sharp and shrewd eye for the miniscular in human motivations and relationships. (over)
