User-Contributed Transcription 2635 Commonwealth Ave.Jacksonville, Fla.Feb. 10, 1952Dear Jack -Thanks ever so much for the English magazines and L.A.G. Strong's delightful books. "The Garden" is a lovingly-drawn nostalgic picture of a time and place now regrettably gone - It gave me several hours of esc--e from my present dingy milieu. I especially liked the character whose mission in life was harrying the Salvation Army by following them about and intoning "Whoremongers" at them.I like also the literary reviews in The Listener. They are more thoughtful and gentle than their American counterparts, it seems to me, less agressively clever. American reviewers seem too often to be less concerned with a considered critical estimate than they are hell-bent to display their own superior erudition - and since it is not difficult to be wittily brilliant by being sardonic at the expense of some upstart author, they too often fall back on the flip quip, the easy slander.I have in mind particularly an article on F. Scott Fitzgerald by a J. Fielding I read in the New(over)
