User-Contributed Transcription May 23.54.Dear Lorraine,Been sweating out a letter from you for two weeks, sister mine, where are you, shy [waler?]? Hope you didn't mind my requesting a pair of sun-glasses, but there really is a necessity - especially when the band plays at the ball games, we're out in the sunlight, and I've been getting headaches from the glare. From the literary front - The Agent has moved the little orphan over to the front stoop of [Valeing?], in the hope that Malcolm Cowley will take it in. No word yet. The next issue of the prison magazine Raiford Record will, I am told, contain a story by one "Blake." Will forward a copy when it comes out shortly. Also, have done a short story the Mule in the Pool, and attempt at commercial comedy, which I'm submitting with some trepidation to Amanda's husband, in the trembling hope he will judge it gently for what it is, a money-trap to snare some of that free-world loot.On that point, I wonder if you could advance me a [fin?] on my prospects. I hate to give you this loot-shot all the time, but it's fairly urgent that I clear up my dates here. The guys here are all fare, ['yummerstan'?], but it ain't exactly Scout Troop 8, in addition to which, in a small tight microcosm of society like this, it's unwise (and inconvenient) to be known as a poor credit risk. If you will, you real satin doll? And when I am famous I shall be able to say (to Katherine Cornell, Marlon Brando, Christine Jorgensen, whoever it may be) "I want you to meet my favorite sister, little Lorraine, who, when I needed it, Was Always There." Are you there?ever, JimJames BlakeBox 221Raiford, Fla.52603 3d Fl. T
