User-Contributed Transcription Oct. 6, 1952Dear Jack -Mother always said that if you go around asking for it, sooner or later you'll get it - I rather [querulously?] and rashly complained that Hemingway's language was over-simplified - then I read Steve Feldman in Gambit (the article on Chaplin's "Monsier Verdoux"), and no amount of earnest re-reading will ever make it clear to me, at least the opening paragraphs. Rather tantalizing, like having a can of anchovies and no opener. What makes it worse is that it's so pleasant to find someone, in these leaden and materialist times, who will take the trouble to go on at much length on a subject so recherche. The cause is a worthy one, and the indignation beautiful to behold - so I do wish that the beginning of the article didn't elude me.- And I don't, to my shame, know what a "periphrasis" is. The last paragraph delighted me. Probably it proves that he is a young man writing in a fine young rage, but it need not have been edited at white heat. This is sheer niggling, but I can't resist it - I quote: "Thus it is that, with baited (sic.) breath, we are waiting the advent of a new Chaplin on the American screen."- Better to keep a clear head, if we've got a fight on our hands, wouldn't you say?
