Dear Eleanor:
I've finished the final draft of a play called "Love and the Census Taker, and [[ ? ]] a copy down to Mrs. Emmett (?). I believe you'll both enjoy reading it. Ben Kecht, who read an original draft, or five, told me, out of a clear day, that my work reminded him a great deal of the feeling and beauty Sherwood Anderson caught in some of his works.
Mrs. Emmett (?) told me that she'd like to have you read the play to her - in the event she has too much difficulty herself, because of her eyesight also that you'll be back in New York toward the end of this week.
I'm very anxious to get your reaction to the play and to have a talk with you . . . I want very much to put myself into a position where I can repay Mrs. Emmett (?) and other investors in my last play -- and the only way I can do it is through my works.
I've had a great deal of misery hit me amid 'Land of Fame' of a personal kind. Among other things my wife and I have separated, and it was almost [[ ? ]] to me at the time that I'd ever be able to [[ ? ]] again. But only in the [[ ? ]] ever salvation.
