Description Volunteer military officer during the Civil War, organizer of the U.S. Army Tenth Cavalry in 1866, commander of various Western army posts and active in opening the Western frontier until retirement in 1890. Grierson’s papers consist of correspondence (including over a hundred letters to his wife, Alice Kirk Grierson), documents such as orders, reports and maps and other military material, as well as personal miscellany relating to his service in the Western Territories. Microfilm copy available in the Newberry Library.

User-Contributed Transcription "B"Headquarters District of the PecosFort Concho TexasMarch 8" 1878Assistant Adjutant GeneralDepartment of TexasSan Antonio TexasSir,Respectfully referring to that portion of telegram from Department Headquarters dated January 25h 1878, with reference to the Establishment of a new Post near San Carlos, in good position to watch Apaches, and prevent their raiding North into Texas, etc, I have to recommend that, if this Post is to be Established, proper precautions be taken to prevent private parties from gaining information as to location of said Post, in order that suitable measures can be taken to secure to the Government a good title to the land on which the Post is to be built, together, with a suitable reservation, surrounding the same, Say; four, or at least not less than two miles square, I make this recommendation now with a view of protecting the interest of the Government, and to prevent, if possible, the Establishment of a post on property belonging to private parties, for which the Government would hereafter be compelled to pay a Exhorbitant price, or high
