Summary
This manuscript account of Pigwacket Fight (1725) was written by Eleazar Melvin. In this document Melvin briefly describes Lovewell's march from Dunstable near present day Nashua, N.H. to Pigwacket, Maine, lists the names of the men in Lovewell's command, and provides some information about the fight and the fatalities. One Eleazar Melven is included in his list, but it is unclear whether it is the same name as the author which is spelled as Melvin.
Biographical/Historical Note
Captain John Lovewell of New Hampshire was one of New England's most famous frontiersmen and scalp hunters. During Dummer's War in the spring of 1725, Lovewell recruited forty-six men to raid the Indian town of Pigwacket, also a tribe of the Abenaki confederacy. Upon approaching Pigwacket on May 8, Lovewell and his men encountered a much larger Indian force than expected. Capt. Lovewell was mortally wounded at the first fire and only eighteen of his men survived the day-long battle.
