pencilled note at top of page Aaron, ChesterJuly 1, 1977Dear Jack:And Christ said: "What are you idiot disciples doing, standing there in the heat all day?" (Ultra new Testament, Kings + Queens, Ch 2, Pg[h?], line 644.)I arrived here in The Holy Land (Holy Hell! It is hot!) June 14th, will be leaving July 14th, returning to San Francisco. I have not written to you, nor heard from you, for years, + here, in Jerusalem, I remember the many missles your letters contained + so I send you now a missle of my own.How are you? I think of you often. My silence does not mean any loss of love or respect. It only means sloth, indolence, + the greatest of these is inactivity. I've spent every spare minute of every spare hour these past few years, sneaking off to the ranch to write. Result: in 5 years I've completed 4 novels + 5 stories. Fourth novel, also for "young adults" (about an oil spill) comes out in August. Am half way through a sequel to About US. The last 2 weeks I've performed the usual pilgrim's trick: The Old City (Arab) in Jerusalem, about one fiftieth of the various mosques, synagogues, tombs; as well trips to Masada, Herodion, Caesarea, Gilboa (did you know that Saul + Jonathan died here?), Hazor (seat of the Canaanite king defeated by Joshua; one of the largest archeological sites in the country; Hyksos fortress, Canaanite + Israelite altars;) etc, etc. I have spent most of my nights meeting novelists, poets, playwrites, etc - + also politicos. Of course everyone here is a politico. The sleaziest, dumbest, most cynical storekeeper is an authority. On what? On anything. You pick it.
