1421 E. 66th PlaceChicago, Ill.February 23, 1934Jack.Will you curse me a lot when you hear I'm out of work + broke? What I owe you (75c - 5 magazines) I'll pay as soon as possible. There was a change in managership at the hotel. Ergo - I've been unemployed for a month. I may go home. I may stay - I want to remain in Chicago. But how I shall manage to do it I'll be damned if I know.I haven't done any writing for over a month. I've been elected to the section committee and it's taken too much of my time. When I demured on the request of the community to accept, I was assured the work assigned me would not be excessive. Yet it has. Now, I must make my decision. Will I write or will I continue as an acted section functionary? When I told the committee how I felt, saying, was it a question of writing or of the section committee, I must choose writing, I was accused of individualistic tendencies. Hell. I tried to explain, its not a question of giving up party work but, rather, of giving up one type of party work. It didn't go over so well. Now, in a case like this, what is one to do? I wonder if Mike Goldever faced this problemI find in the party that the J.R.C. is regarded disdainfully and with tolerant amusement by a great number of comrades. They do not regard it as important party work. Now, of course, stricken I admit I understand that trade union, basic, work is stricken at the moment of prime importance. But, also, I contend that writing is what I think I am fitted for and is what I want to do, and that the problem is to find how, as a writer, I can aid in basic work.Isn't it hell? You see I like the section work. But I want and demand that I be allowed time to study and to write. I think I can do both, when and if the work of the section is properly allocated among the members of the committee. But how long that when and if?
