Description
Original study for a lithograph of a political cartoon by John Doyle, grandfather of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, dated Jan. 29, 1839. The drawing, no. 570 of a series of almost one thousand political sketches which Doyle produced between 1829 and 1849, shows a butler and four coachman candidates, with dialogue written above three of them, and variations of these comments written in the right margin and on the verso. As a political illustrator, Doyle uses the portly, bald figure of the butler to represent John Bull, the personification of the typical Englishman, and portrays the newly-crowned Queen Victoria as the "Mistress", and the candidates for Prime Minister--the leading politicians of the day--as candidates for the coachman's position. Signed in upper right-hand corner with Doyle's "secret" monogram, "HB", and notation "Sketches/570"; date of "Jan. 29, 1839" in lower left-hand corner. Diluted ink wash in gray applied with brush to fine-quality artist's paper, unevenly trimmed; image within double-ruled gray ink borders.
